PRESS: Russia may set up compensation fund for data leak victims

MOSCOW, Aug 19 (PRIME) -- Russia will establish a special fund of material compensation for the victims of personal data leaks, it will be replenished at the expense of the fines paid by the guilty companies, business daily Kommersant reported on Friday.

“The Digital Development Ministry is discussing with a number of large IT companies creating a fund of material compensation for the people fallen victims to leaks of databases,” the daily reported citing sources.

The money may be obtained from the turnover-based fines that the companies will be obliged to pay for data leaks. The ministry told the daily about the work on a mechanism of compensations adding that “it should be determined how the amount will be calculated, under what conditions one can claim damages.”

The communications service earlier said that it had registered more than 40 large leaks of personal data of Russians since the beginning of 2022 with more than 300 million records being compromised.
